For those of you who are gluten-intolerant and/or have Celiac Disease, we have low-gluten Communion hosts. These hosts are purchased from one of the few Vatican approved suppliers, the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration in Missouri.
In 2005, the Benedictine Sisters of Perpetual Adoration developed a Communion host that is made from gelatinized wheat starch and with less than 0.01% gluten in one host. These low gluten hosts meet the requirements of Canon Law and are validly used at Mass. Many gluten-intolerant persons may be able to consume it or some portion of it, but are strongly advised to check with their personal physician in advance.
If you would like to receive Holy Communion with this type of host, please go to the sacristy at least ten minutes prior to the Mass you are attending and inform the celebrant or Deacon. A low-gluten host will then be set aside for you to receive at Communion time.
Low gluten hosts will be distributed by the minister at the Tabernacle side of the church, after others have received. Please wait there for the minister to retrieve the Hosts.
