Catholic Relief Services is the official international humanitarian
agency of the U.S. Catholic community. CRS is motivated by the
example of Jesus Christ to assist the poor and suffering in more
than 100 countries on the basis of need, without regard to race,
religion, or nationality.
For 35
years, Catholic Relief Services’ Operation Rice Bowl has offered
Catholics in the United States a way to connect with our brothers
and sisters overseas and in our own back yards.
Over
200 parishes, schools, and others participated in Operation Rice
Bowl in the Chicago Archdiocese last year, raising $268,210.46 for
our brothers and sisters who struggle with hunger and poverty. This
amount represents the 75% that supports development projects
overseas. Featured countries for 2010 are: Lesotho (HIV/AIDS),
Bolivia (agriculture), Afghanistan (education), Ethiopia (water),
and Nicaragua (microfinance). Haitian relief work will also benefit
from 2010 ORB donations.
25% of
your contributions remain here in the Archdiocese of Chicago to help
alleviate hunger and poverty programs locally. 39 food pantries and
shelters were given $41,145 in grant monies.
Won’t you please help?
Rice Bowl Boxes are available on the
table by the front doors of our church. Teach your child that giving
up a small treat for themselves can help feed a hungry child in
another country. Use one as a bank for your spare change throughout
the Lenten season. The bank can be returned to church any time
during Lent or Holy Week. You may also contribute by check. If you
choose do so, please mark both the outside of your return
envelope and the notation on the check: for CRS/Operation Rice Bowl. |
