Today we celebrate the Birth
of John the Baptist. John described himself as “the voice of one
crying out in the wilderness, make straight the way of the Lord.” His
appearance signaled the end of the Old Testament, and the beginning of
something altogether new. John understood that his role was to prepare
the way. He himself was not the way.
While in prison, John sent disciples to Jesus with the question, are you
he who is to come? Jesus told them to tell John what they had seen: the
blind see, the deaf hear, the lame walk, and the poor have the good news
preached to them. How John must have rejoiced!
Transitions are not always easy. John suffered a martyr’s death for
speaking the truth. Jesus endured the cross for our salvation. As
Christians we are invited to experience all the little “deaths” and
“resurrections” in our lives as our sharing in Jesus’ paschal mystery.
We are learning to let go of our well made plans in order to experience
the leadership of the Lord. Thy will, not my will, be done!
