HABEMUS
PAPAM!
The whole world was listening Tuesday as the announcement was made, we have
a Pope! Joseph Cardinal
Ratzinger has chosen to call himself, Pope Benedict XVI!
The new Holy Father was a famous theologian when I was a boy,
during the Second Vatican council. He
was then part of what conservatives called “the Rhineish conspiracy”
of liberal theologians who had no small influence over the teaching of the
council fathers. Years later,
as prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, he has come
to be known as a conservative defender of the Faith.
Times and people change!
These are the Holy Fathers first words to the world:
“Dear brothers and sisters, after the great Pope John Paul II,
the cardinals have elected me -- a simple, humble worker in the vineyard
of the Lord.”
“The fact that the Lord can work and act even with insufficient means
consoles me, and above all I entrust myself to your prayers.”
“In the joy of the risen Lord, trusting in his permanent help, we go
forward. The Lord will help us and Mary his very holy mother stands by
us.”
As Pope Benedict XVI begins his ministry of unity and leadership in the
church, let us assist him with our prayers so that he might lead us where
God wants us to go. |
